What they needed
Lobbying disclosures are public, but they’re hard to read and harder to connect to the bills they’re about. The project needed a site that makes the spending easy to search and understand, without taking sides.
What was built
A receipt for every bill
Lobbying outlays mapped to bills and laid out as itemized receipts.
Search
Search across bills, companies and lobbying spend.
Ranked by spending
The bills that drew the most corporate lobbying money, ranked by the numbers with no editorial picks.
Open source
The data pipeline and the site are open for anyone to check.
How it turned out
Every bill gets an itemized receipt of the lobbying money behind it, and anyone can search by bill, company or amount spent. Rankings come straight from the numbers, and the code and data are open for anyone to check.
